The hotel has currently been under the management and ownership of Jean & John Richardson & family since 1968. Located in the north western corner of the Lake District, the Buttermere Valley is one of the best walking and climbing areas in the Lake District with some of Wainwrights most famous walks right on the doorstep.

Being only five minutes walk to either Buttermere or Crummock Water, where there is excellent wild brown trout fishing. The current record for Crummock is of a fish just over 15lb Trout. The National Trust permits required are available from Dalegarth & Wood House they can both also supply trust rowing boats for both lakes. Some of the best fishing is in the months of April and May.
